9 Best in Class Online Fitting Rooms To Boost Your E-commerce Sales

Let’s talk about online shopping. Waiting earnestly for your package to arrive only to discover it doesn’t fit you is cruel and unusual punishment. Bad fit ruins online shopping. Bad fit runs brands into the ground.

Surprisingly, like people, not all “M” sizes are created equal. The letter represents a range of measurements some of which are sometimes in the “S” size category, other times it is nearly another brand’s measurements for “L”. If all e-commerce customers face this issue and all e-commerce stores want more sales and more repeat customers,  face this issue of predicting fit, why not address it with a web solution?

I give you the dawning of the age of the online fitting room. We’ve reviewed every single one existing in our galaxy and cherry picked the top 10 provided for you here in a nice list with nice pictures. Let’s dive in.

Online Fitting Rooms Come in 2 Flavors

The DIY fitting room solutions, we’ll call Self Set Up is exactly what it sounds like. You sign up, set up and launch an online fitting room for your ecommerce shop. The rest are a little more complex. They make up the “Require Assisted Set up” cohort.

If reading isn’t your thing, we have a nice compare & contrast chart with top industry players and their solutions.

We evaluate online fitting rooms by asking the following:

1. What's needed for set up?

If being on the phone with customer service reps isn’t your thing or you don’t have $4900 to spend just to start using a fitting room that by the way, you’ll need an entire integration team to set up for you, the self set up option is your new BFF.

2. Is there a free plan?

The availability of a free lifetime package shows a business’ appreciation for their customers and all successful businesses know that you got to try, before you buy.

3. What info are recommendations based on?

We take garment and body measurements as our supreme criteria for accuracy in recommendations. It’s an obvious thing - to give accurate feedback a fitting service must compare the measurements of garments against the customer’s unique body measurements.

But in fact it’s a rare case for services to really measure at least one of those crucial criteria. Mostly, recommendations are based on three approaches:

3.1. Size charts + secondary body data like age, weight and height meaning the chances you get an accurate recommendation is as likely as you are to win playing roulette.

3.2. Some magic data analysis that helps companies intuitively advise on size using previously successful experiences of other users.

3.3. Recommendations based on comparing measurements of clothing you already own that fits you well against the measurements of items you are browsing to buy.

Here is a video where you can see what fit recommendation you are most likely to get buy using this or that service:

4. Does the solution take into account the stretchiness of the garment and style details?

The stretchy nature of certain fabrics is really important. Measurements of some super stretchy piece of clothing will be of little use to an unassuming person who will enter his/here body parameters. Aiming to get the perfect fit will result in completely inaccurate because stretchy clothing looks like well, children’s clothing until you um, stretch it. All the recommendations based on that measurements would be increasingly inaccurate.

Let’s start with the only existing (for now) self set up fitting room — AstraFit

1. AstraFit

At the time of writing AstraFit is the only online fitting room solution on our list that offers a lifetime free plan, measures garments individually rather than relying on sizing charts, and couples these measurements with the customer’s self reported body parameters to generate an accurate prediction for the“feel” factor of clothes that is so elusive in the user’s online shopping experience.

AstraFit’s free plan includes all their premium features like Fit Visualisation, Adaptive Human Language Description and a Scored Recommendation system to ensure your customers skip the guesswork next time they shop online.

Pros

✅you can set it up all by yourself over a 20 minutes break with a cup of coffee

✅size advising is based on supreme criteria: garment measurements  and primary body measurements (chest, waist, hips and height)

✅garment digitization is available for small and huge businesses (hot solution for marketplaces which have thousands of clothing models that suppose to be digitize)

✅free lifetime membership option

✅takes into account material stretchiness and model properties

Cons

⛔️doesn’t support shoes/undergarments

Next up we have Sizebay and Fitle web solutions, the workings of which are based on size charts and secondary body measurements. You enter your height, weight and age - then based on ordinary size chart you get a recommendation. Yes, there is no accurate data on the garment (just size chart) and no accurate data on you (just height, weight and age) but fitting rooms swear — you get super useful and accurate result.

2. Sizebay

Sizebay works by taking into account the gender, height, weight and age you enter.  Recommendations are based on your secondary measurements and size charts provided by brands. Literally, Sizebay doesn’t measure garments, they work with the size charts and approximate body measurements. Вased on the data the service will recommend a size to you and let you know on a sliding scale (loose to tight) how well the item will fit. Sometimes this guessing game works, sometimes not.

Pros

✅starting price is 95$

✅supports shoes/undergarments

✅high response rate

Cons

⛔️size advising is based on size charts and secondary body measurements

⛔️doesn’t take into account material stretchiness and model properties

⛔️no free package

⛔️not self set up service

3. Fitle

Like Sizebay, it uses size charts to suggest size and fit and is only offered in French at the time of writing. Fitle will also ask you to put in your weight, height and age but includes size data from brands you wear to generate a prediction. For example, Fitle will tell you that for 75% of users who wear S in Zara will feel their best in a garment size S in this instant too.

Pros

✅relatively low starting price

✅high response rate

Cons

⛔️size advising is based on size charts and secondary body measurements

⛔️doesn’t take into account material stretchiness and model properties

⛔️no free package

⛔️not self set up service

⛔️doesn’t support shoes/undergarments

Next up we have 3DLOOK, Metail, Visualook and Viubox - their recommendations are based on 3D fitting technologies. All use the same mechanism of action to map your size recommendations. These companies work by matching your primary body measurements to the garment’s unique measurements and offer up precise sizing and fit recommendations on an individual basis. The only drawback is the super high price as the 3D software they use is quite expensive.

4. Metail

In the 3D fitting industry Metail is quite popular. It has custom avatars, combines great fit tech with a style selection tool that lets you try on multiple garments at once to see how things look put together. The user provides weight, height, bust, waist and hip measurements and bra size if applicable. By matching your measurements to the garment’s measurements Metail is able to provide very accurate size advising. The drawback here is the expensive price tag. Prices are custom and you will have to speak to their sales rep to get a quote. If you can live without avatars, sign up for this. It uses the same technology, offers a free plan and requires no assistance to set up.

Pros

✅size advising is based on supreme criteria: garment measurements (3D patterns in this case) and primary body measurements (chest, waist, hips and height)

Cons

⛔️doesn’t take into account material stretchiness and model properties

⛔️no free package

⛔️not self set up service

⛔️3D clothing patterns needed

⛔️doesn’t support shoes/undergarments

⛔️expensive service, geared towards enterprise

5. VisuaLook

Visualook is a 3D model solution that attempts to offer sizing assistance for online retailers. Visualook doesn’t accept existing garment measurements, they require garment patterns, the kind you usually make for 3D clothing renderings in designated software applications. In case you don’t have any, you can hire a 3D specialist to make them for you but of course with multiple collections a year this ends up being very costly for your business.

The problem with garment patterns, even if you happen to have them, is that due to washes and treatments occurring during manufacturing the final pieces vary quite a bit in measurements from the original patterns. This is why when your garments finally arrive, any fit recommendations you offer are bound to be inaccurate for your customers, since they are based on patterns not the real deal. Moreover, the pricing for this service is exorbitant.

Pros

✅size advising is based on supreme criteria: garment measurements (3D patterns in this case) and primary body measurements (chest, waist, hips and height)

✅supports shoes/undergarments for an additional fee of €1000

Cons

⛔️doesn’t take into account material stretchiness and model properties

⛔️no free package

⛔️not self set up service

⛔️3D clothing patterns needed

⛔️starting price is €4900

⛔️expensive service, geared towards enterprise

6. Viubox

Sensemi, the brand behind the magic mirror for brick and mortar stores have gone ahead and created a 3d online fitting room. Viubox is a technology that applies itself to businesses as well as end users. Users create a personal avatar, unique to their measurements and use it to try on clothing in e-commerce stores that support the software. To create an avatar a user must upload two profile photos of themselves and one full frontal image.

Pros

✅size advising is based on supreme criteria: garment measurements (3D patterns in this case) and primary body measurements (chest, waist, hips and height)

Cons

⛔️doesn’t take into account material stretchiness and model properties

⛔️no free package

⛔️not self set up service

⛔️3D clothing patterns needed

⛔️doesn’t support shoes/undergarments

⛔️expensive service, geared towards enterprise

3D services have a lot of promise and look great on a website but at the time of writing we could not find a single e-commerce business that uses any of these 3D fitting rooms or could provide us with feedback on a demo. Moving on to the next category.

Up next we have solutions known in the industry as “size advisors” meaning they take into account your weight, height and age and basic fit preference like "loose" or "fitted" to recommend a size in a certain brand. Their  advice is based mainly on the size people with a similar to body type to yours already purchased and whether or not they returned it. These services are limited in their usefulness and after a month or two of service users drop off feeling like the tools aren’t really more insightful than their own best guess.

7. Fitanalytics

These guys provide users with what they call an “intuitive size advisor” that can offer certainty and satisfaction by providing size recommendations and fit predictions. Like the other solutions, they will ask you to input your height, weight, age and for even greater accuracy they ask you to adjust your fit preference. Fitanalytics’ recommendations are based mainly on the size people like you bought, and whether they returned it.

Pros

✅supports shoes/undergarments

✅supports enterprise level companies

Cons

⛔️size advising is based on magic data analysis that helps fitting rooms intuitively advice on size using previous successful experience of other users

⛔️doesn’t take into account material stretchiness and model properties

⛔️no free package

⛔️not self set up service

⛔️expensive service, geared towards enterprise

8. TrueFit

TrueFit claims to use a holistic methodology that incorporates fit, personal style and an individual's most flattering styles to present an accurate sizing recommendation that provides more benefit than a sizing chart. Тhey focus heavily on personalization and offer a dazzling array of software solutions on their website. With that said, the cost of this tool makes it unaffordable for most e-commerce owners. After you get a quote you’ll need to make several phone calls to get someone to set up ТrueFit on your site. Be warned, this process can take days.

Pros

✅supports shoes/undergarments

✅supports enterprise level companies

Cons

⛔️size advising is based on magic data analysis that helps fitting rooms intuitively advice on size using previous successful experience of other users

⛔️doesn’t take into account material stretchiness and model properties

⛔️no free package

⛔️not self set up service

⛔️expensive service, geared towards enterprise

⛔️ only willing to work with brand giants

9. Virtusize

Virtusize generates sizing recommendations by comparing the garment you are trying on online to items you already own. The interface allows users to search their database for the item they own to compare, or hand measure the garment they own and use those inputs to generate a prediction for size and fit for the item in question. The issue with this methodology is the stretchy nature of certain fabrics. It would be of little use to measure stretchy items without fitting as the measurements would be increasingly inaccurate. Despite these drawbacks, Virtusize has many clients who enjoy using their software.

Pros

✅supports enterprise level companies

Cons

⛔️size advising is based on magic data analysis that helps fitting rooms intuitively advice on size using previous successful experience of other users

⛔️doesn’t take into account material stretchiness and model properties

⛔️no free package

⛔️not self set up service

⛔️expensive service, geared towards enterprise

⛔️ only willing to work with brand giants

Final Thoughts

All in all, there are many solutions out there ranging from self setups where you sign up and set up (you guessed it) by yourself to those you’d need assistance for. There are size advisors and fit predictors, 3D modeling avatars and more.

Self set up solutions like AstraFit with access to all the features you need to run your business like a boss and become your customer’s hero, just over the brief span of your next coffee break.

The assistance required solutions involve getting on the phone, getting a specialist to install and run the integration for you and these tend to be pricier.
